AI Transparency & Risk Disclosure
Last updated: March 10, 2026
Technologies Bernli Inc. (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is committed to transparency about how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in our personal finance application for users in Canada. This page explains what our AI does, what personal information may be processed to provide AI-powered features, its limitations, and the risks you should be aware of when using AI-powered features.
This disclosure is intended to support transparency, meaningful consent, accountability, safeguarding, access/correction, and complaint-handling expectations under Canadian privacy and consumer-facing transparency standards, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Quebec’s Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector as amended by Law 25 where applicable, and guidance from Canadian privacy regulators on responsible, trustworthy, and privacy-protective generative AI. It does not treat proposed, non-binding, or failed Canadian AI legislation as current binding law.
- HOW WE USE AI
Bernli uses AI (specifically Google Cloud AI — Gemini) to provide the following features within the Bernli service:
-
AI-Generated Dashboards: Automated summaries of your connected financial activity, including charts, spending breakdowns, and trends.
-
Transaction Categorization: AI suggests categories and subcategories for your transactions based on merchant names and transaction descriptions.
-
Budget Insights: AI-generated observations about your spending patterns, budget adherence, and possible savings opportunities based on the information available in Bernli.
-
Financial Forecasting: AI-assisted estimates of future income and expenses based on historical patterns; these are not guarantees or professional financial advice.
-
Document Processing (OCR): AI extracts text and data from uploaded receipts, statements, and other financial documents.
-
Natural Language Interaction: An AI assistant that answers questions about your financial data in conversational language for informational purposes only.
- AI OUTPUTS ARE INFORMATIONAL ONLY — NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE
All AI-generated content in Bernli is provided for informational purposes only. It does not constitute financial, investment, tax, legal, accounting, credit, insurance, or any other professional advice, and should not be treated as a recommendation to buy, sell, borrow, invest, or take any other financial action.
Technologies Bernli Inc. is not a registered investment adviser, dealer, portfolio manager, financial planner, tax advisor, lawyer, accountant, or licensed professional of any kind. Use of Bernli does not create any fiduciary, advisory, client, solicitor-client, or professional relationship between you and Technologies Bernli Inc.
You are solely responsible for your financial decisions. Always review AI outputs carefully and consult a qualified professional before making significant financial, investment, tax, legal, or other decisions based on information provided through the Services.
- KNOWN LIMITATIONS OF OUR AI
You should be aware of the following limitations when using AI-powered features:
Accuracy Limitations
-
AI outputs may contain errors. AI-generated insights, categorizations, summaries, forecasts, and conversational responses can be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, or misleading. Always verify important information independently before relying on it.
-
OCR is not 100% accurate. Data extracted from uploaded documents (amounts, dates, merchant names) may contain errors. You should always review and correct extracted data before relying on it.
-
Estimates are not guarantees. Values labeled “AI-Estimated” in the dashboard are approximations and may not reflect actual data. Forecasts are projections based on historical patterns and are not predictions of future results.
Bias and Fairness Limitations
-
AI models can reflect biases. The AI models we use are trained on broad datasets that may contain societal biases. While we take steps to reduce inappropriate or unfair outcomes in our application, AI-generated insights may not account for individual circumstances such as cultural spending patterns, regional cost-of-living differences within Canada, accessibility needs, language preferences, or personal financial goals.
-
Categorization may be imprecise. Transaction categorization is based on pattern matching and may not always reflect the true purpose of a transaction. For example, a purchase at a store that sells both groceries and electronics may be categorized incorrectly.
-
One-size-fits-all limitations. AI insights are generated from general financial patterns and may not be appropriate for your specific financial situation, goals, risk tolerance, province or territory, or personal circumstances.
Data Dependency Limitations
-
Quality depends on input data. AI outputs are only as good as the data provided. If your bank connections are incomplete, transactions are missing, or uploaded documents are unclear, AI outputs will be less accurate.
-
Historical patterns may not predict future results. Financial forecasting relies on past transaction data. Changes in your income, expenses, employment, or economic conditions can make forecasts unreliable.
-
Limited to connected accounts. AI can only analyze data from bank accounts and financial institutions you have connected through Plaid. It does not have a complete picture of your finances if you have accounts that are not connected.
Technical Limitations
-
AI may “hallucinate.” Large language models can occasionally generate plausible-sounding but incorrect information, including incorrect explanations of transactions, budgets, or financial concepts. This is a known limitation of current AI technology.
-
Context window limitations. The AI assistant may not have full context of all your historical transactions when generating responses, which can lead to incomplete or inaccurate answers.
-
Real-time data lag. There may be a delay between when a transaction occurs at your bank and when it appears in Bernli. AI insights are based on the most recently synced data, which may not be fully up to date.
- HUMAN REVIEW AND CONTESTABILITY
Bernli does not make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on you. Bernli does not use AI outputs to approve, deny, price, or set the terms of any financial product or service. All AI outputs are informational tools designed to help you make your own informed decisions.
If you believe any AI-generated content or AI-processed personal information is inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading:
-
Report it in-app. Use the “Report Issue” button on any AI-generated dashboard to flag inaccurate data, misleading insights, accessibility concerns, or other issues.
-
Contact us directly. Email [email protected] with details about the content or personal information you believe is inaccurate, incomplete, or improperly processed.
-
Request human review. You may request that a human team member review any AI-generated output, explanation, categorization, or forecast. We will respond to such requests within 10 business days, subject to identity verification and any additional time permitted or required by applicable Canadian privacy law.
We review user-reported AI issues to help correct errors, improve safeguards, and address privacy-related requests or complaints through our Canadian privacy escalation process.
- HOW YOUR DATA IS PROCESSED BY AI
When you choose to use AI-powered features, Bernli may process the personal information needed to provide the feature, which may include account and transaction data, merchant names, transaction descriptions, categories, amounts, dates, uploaded document text, prompts, questions, and related service metadata. Your data is processed as follows:
-
Third-party AI provider: We use Google Cloud AI (Gemini) on a paid enterprise tier as a service provider to process AI requests on our behalf. Your data is transmitted securely via encrypted connections (TLS 1.2+), and we require service-provider safeguards that support confidentiality, security, limited use, and accountability.
-
No training on your data: Based on our current enterprise configuration and agreement, Google does not use your prompts, financial data, uploaded documents, or AI outputs to train or improve its AI models.
-
Transient processing: Google Cloud AI processes your data to provide the requested AI output and may maintain a transient cache for up to 24 hours for service operation and reliability. Data is not persistently stored by Google for Bernli’s AI requests under our current enterprise configuration.
-
Data minimization: We send only the data reasonably necessary to generate the requested AI output. We do not send your full financial history for every AI request, and we design prompts and feature workflows to limit personal information shared with the AI provider to what is needed for the specific feature.
For complete details on data handling, consent choices, safeguards, retention, access, correction, complaints, and our use of service providers, see our Privacy Policy, specifically Section 6 (AI Products), Section 8 (Data Retention), and any applicable Terms and Conditions cross-references for the Services.
- AI FUNCTION AND RISK CONTEXT
Bernli’s AI features are designed and offered as informational tools for personal finance organization and understanding. They are not designed to make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on users, and this disclosure does not rely on non-Canadian AI risk classifications or treat proposed Canadian AI legislation as binding law.
Bernli’s AI features are limited in scope because:
-
Bernli does not approve, deny, price, or set the terms of any financial product or service.
-
Bernli does not make or substantially factor into any decision about your creditworthiness, insurance, employment, housing, eligibility, or access to financial services.
-
All AI outputs are informational in nature. You retain full control over all financial decisions and remain responsible for reviewing any output before acting on it.
-
Bernli explicitly disclaims any fiduciary, advisory, or professional relationship (see our Terms and Conditions, Section 21).
This risk context is based on the nature of our AI’s actual function as an informational tool, not a decision-making system.
- YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
When using AI-powered features in Bernli, you should:
Limit unnecessary information. Do not include unnecessary sensitive personal information in prompts or uploads, and only upload documents that you want Bernli to process for the requested feature.
-
Verify important information. Do not rely solely on AI-generated content for important financial decisions. Cross-check amounts, dates, categorizations, forecasts, and explanations with your original bank statements, documents, and other reliable records.
-
Review OCR results. Always review and correct data extracted from uploaded documents before using it for tax filing, budgeting, recordkeeping, or other purposes.
-
Use professional advice. For significant financial decisions (including investments, tax planning, debt management, retirement planning, credit, insurance, or legal matters), consult a qualified financial advisor, accountant, lawyer, tax professional, or other appropriate professional.
-
Report errors and privacy concerns. If you notice inaccurate AI outputs, inappropriate personal information processing, or other concerns, report them using the in-app feedback tools or by contacting [email protected]. This helps us improve the service and address user concerns.
-
Keep accounts connected only if you want current AI insights. For the most accurate AI insights, ensure your bank accounts remain connected and syncing; if you disconnect an account or limit available data, AI outputs may be less complete or less current.
- We may update this disclosure as our AI capabilities evolve, as our service-provider arrangements change, or as applicable Canadian laws, regulator guidance, or our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions are updated. We will provide notice of material changes through the same channels described in our Terms and Conditions or Privacy Policy, as applicable.
